Your body as teacher:
It’s popular these days to be wary of your negative thoughts. “The Secret,” and other tomes of the Law of Attraction, caution that negative thinking can create a negative reality. It’s better, they say, to try and think positively- to keep your thoughts on what you do want, not what you don’t.
This may be true and helpful in the short term. But if you are interested in healing the part of yourself that is giving rise to these negative thoughts and emotions, these popular teachings can be detrimental. For example, unprocessed emotions can be stored in your body, getting in the way of important physiological processes. Physical pain, when ignored, can just get worse.
As I describe in this recorded broadcast, constantly imagining something different from your present situation is a great cause of suffering. Every time you return from your imagining, your situation is unchanged and you can’t help but be disappointed.
On the other hand, a closer examination of your present- exactly how you are feeling mentally, emotionally, and physically- can be a joyful exercise in self-discovery and healing.
