| Were you diagnosed with celiac disease as a child? Or perhaps someone you knew? If so, you were probably told that you would grow out of it, and it may seem like you did. However, as the medical community gains a more in-depth understanding of this serious disease, it has become clear that celiac disease is not something that you can grow out of. In fact, though the original symptoms of failure to thrive and/or diarrhea went away, you are probably suffering from the profound deleterious effects of celiac disease right now.
I have recently had cause to investigate the medical details of celiac disease and I wanted to share some of what I have found with you. I focus on understanding and healing the causes of allergies. However, the destruction that celiac disease can wreak on your small intestine has serious repercussions for your whole body. Therefore, for some individuals, it is critical to avoid gluten while energy medicine is used to heal underlying issues.
Recently, I’ve been made aware of some sobering statistics. It is estimated that 1% of Americans suffer from celiac disease–defined as a auto-immune reaction to gluten that destroys portions of the small intestine. However, an estimated 97% of those who are sick remain undiagnosed!
These figures come from a great book that was published a couple of years ago called Celiac Disease: The Hidden Epidemic.” The book is co-authored by Peter H. R. Green, M.D., a leading expert in the diagnosis and treatment of celiac disease. It is clear, concise, and wonderfully explanative.
Please consider the following survey, taken from the book:
Check each symptom you have had at least once a week during the past three months:
___ Bloating, gas, and/or stomach cramping
___ Diarrhea or runny stools
___ Constipation
___ Joint pain or numbness or tingling in your extremities
___ Itchy skin lesions
___ Constant unexplained fatigue
___ Frequent headaches or migraines
Check if you have had or been diagnosed with any of the following:
___ Irritable bowel syndrome
___ Eczema or unexplained dermatitis
___ Fibromyalgia
___ Chronic fatigue syndrome
___ Nervous stomach (non-ulcer dyspepsia)
Check if you have any of the following:
___ Lactose intolerance
___ Osteopenia and/or osteoporosis
___ Autoimmune disorders (thyroid disease [hypo/hyper], type 1 diabetes, Sjogrens syndrome, chronic liver disease) or an immediate family member with an autoimmune condition
___ Peripheral neuropathy
___ Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
___ Small intestinal cancer
___ Psychiatric disorders or depression
___ Anemia (iron deficiency)
___ Infertility
If you have checked one or more lines in section I and II and have any of the illnesses listed in section III, a greater understanding of celiac disease may have a profound impact on your life.
Importantly, celiac disease is the only auto-immune disease that has an identified environmental trigger. In other words, even though research hasn’t figured out exactly what causes celiac disease, it is possible to manage it effectively by removing the trigger, gluten, from your diet.
As a physician, I can help you identify whether or not you have celiac disease and what the appropriate steps are for re-taking control of your life. As an energy medicine practitioner, I can help you take the additional step of healing underlying stresses that may be causing your immune system to malfunction.
This is a two-pronged approach that, quite frankly, isn’t available elsewhere.
Many leading scientists think that what we know now about celiac disease is just the tip of the iceberg. If you are chronically ill, please ask for help. Together–armed with new research–we will figure it out.
