January 2010- Is High Cholesterol Dangerous?

Dr. Travis Elliott

Raise your hand if you’ve heard any of these nutrition myths:
  • Your cholesterol number is important for predicting how likely you are to having a heart attack.
  • Fat (especially saturated fat) is bad for you.
  • The only way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories and/or to burn more calories through exercise.
Would you like to know the truth about losing weight and preventing heart disease?
If so, please consider these two recommendations:

Class:  “Why Eating Fat-Free Food is Like Kissing Your Sister.”
Date/Time: Saturday, January 30th, from 10 am to 12 pm.
Cost:  $35

A class handout (and some snacks) will be provided.

This class will teach you:
  • the science behind the burning and storage of fat.
  • the reason insulin (not calories) is the key to gaining and losing weight.
  • the reason semi-starvation (low calorie) diets don’t help people lose weight and how to pick a diet that does.
  • the role of cholesterol in the body.
  • the evidence against cholesterol as a cause of heart disease.
  • when statins (like Lipitor) are appropriate and when they are not.
  • what the true risk factors for heart disease are and how to avoid them.
  • what laboratory tests to ask your doctor for to gauge your heart disease risk.
So…bring a friend, and I will see you on Saturday, January 30th!

Book Recommendation:
The Great Cholesterol Con
by Malcolm Kendrick
If you are interested in this topic and are unable to attend my class, please check out this book.  If you are coming to the class, you may want to also read this book.  In a humorous and slightly sarcastic style, Kendrick details many of the failings of the cholesterol-heart disease hypothesis.  Please click on the picture to learn more and/or purchase from Powells.com.

Thanks for reading.
