Tired of the big brown bag?
Do you struggle with deciding what supplements to take? After an untold number of trips to the health store and numerous doctors, have you collected an impressive array of half-empty supplement bottles?
If you’re like most people, you can’t remember what half of them are for, and you are certain that most didn’t work as well as you wanted them to.
We naturopaths like to call this the “brown bag syndrome.” Often a new patient will come in dragging a big brown bag full of bottles, looking for some direction. And when I was practicing “best guess medicine,” I would dutifully sort through them, giving my best recommendations.
But it was frustrating, because while I knew which products made logical sense based on my expertise, I didn’t know exactly which pills were going to help my patient. And as we all know, high quality supplements can take big chunks out of our monthly budgets!
WISDOM TO THE RESCUE (for the body and the wallet)
What was missing from these “best guess” brown bag sessions was the patient’s own innate intelligence. By integrating the brown bag into a BodyTalk session, it is possible to bring wisdom to the process. The combination of my own expertise in nutrition and the incredible intelligence of each patient creates a personalized list of supplements- a list that’s usually pretty short.
The list is short because many of the supplements we take, we might not actually need. And the list of what we need before getting BodyTalk is probably longer than what we need after BodyTalk. If a person has a hurt leg, a crutch can be very useful. But if the leg heals, the crutch can be tossed aside.
If your body heals itself from the inside, you can let go of some of the little bottles that you rely on to crutch you through the day.
In fact, throwing away most of the brown bag turns out to be a pretty effective way to help what ails your wallet, as well as your body.
And clearly identifying the supplements that you do need will not only free up some shelf space, but it will give you more confidence in your plan for better health.
